Phil Hellmuth was probably expecting to walk away with his 12th World Series of Poker bracelet from the $1,500 HORSE event this year. Both considering his legendary swollen ego and that he held the lead after an eventful first day. The $1,500 HORSE (not to be confused with the $50,000 HORSE) event drew an impressive 803 participants, the majority of which qualified though online poker tournaments.
Hellmuth holds the record with 11 bracelets from different events at the WSOP, but so far all of them have come from Texas holdem events. In other words, a bracelet in a mixed event like HORSE would prove once and for all that Hellmuth – who poker pro blogs love to hate – has what it takes to win across several poker variations, in case anyone doubted.
Eventually, the $1,500 HORSE event was one by James Schaaf, who bagged the bracelet and $256,412, while “the brat” ended up in third place. Last we heard Phil Hellmuth was still in the race in the Main Event, however, so we clearly haven’t seen the last of Phil in this year’s WSOP.
